Znamensky Cathedral

The history of Znamensky Cathedral take its roots in the first half of 17th century where at the place where it is now the first wooden chapel was built. The construction of stone building of the church started on 1st September 1768 with a previous name in honor of icon of Mother of God’ Sign. It was sanctified only 33 years later in 1801. The first building of stone church painted in white consisted of main chapel, bell tower, canteen and a porch. After the Revolution of 1917 the cathedral was used as a transit prison. In a period of 1933-1941 the church was returned to diocese but with the beginning of war was taken back to dislocate army forces there. Finally the cathedral was returned to the eparchy. On 19th June 1994 here was held a religious procession first time for so many years. Today Znamensky Cathedral is a functioning church and one of the most wonderful symbols of Tyumen.
